As a seasoned Pittsburgh wedding photographer with a deep appreciation for diverse traditions, I find great joy in capturing traditional wedding ceremonies of a variety of religious practices. Today, I share my insights into photographing Coptic Orthodox weddings, drawing inspiration from the rich traditions observed at St. Mary’s Coptic Orthodox Church in Ambridge, a suburb of Pittsburgh. When I was first invited to photograph a wedding at St. Mary’s Coptic Orthodox Church, I worked closely with my couple to understand their church’s traditions, order of events, and how the church’s clergy worked with the wedding photographers during the ceremony. I always want to be incredibly respectful!
Understanding the Rich Traditions:
Coptic Orthodox weddings are steeped in traditions that symbolize commitment and spirituality. The Bethrolal ceremony marks the beginning of the journey, while the exchange of rings and the crowning ceremony are pivotal moments. Understanding the profound meanings behind each ritual allows me to anticipate and capture the essence of these sacred moments. It’s also important in understanding these pieces of the ceremony, to know how close I can get for photography and when they happen in the order of events. Some of the ceremony may be in a different language, so it’s especially important to be prepared and pay attention!
Navigating Sacred Spaces:
St. Mary’s Coptic Orthodox Church in Ambridge provides a unique backdrop for these ceremonies. The sacred ambiance, coupled with the church’s distinct architecture, presents both challenges and opportunities for a photographer. Through my experience, I’ve learned to embrace the natural light and work with the layout to ensure I capture the authenticity of the moment. I also understand when flash may be needed for the different setup of the sanctuary and when to use it. It was also nice to understand that the clergy (and the attendees familiar with the traditions) were very comfortable with me entering into the space to photograph the important, up-close moments of the day. Typically I stay back from the people involved in the ceremony on long lenses, but that simply would have made some key shots impossible. Instead, I was welcomed with open arms to get in there and photograph the important events as I needed to for my couple.
The Beauty in Robes:
One of the most visually captivating aspects of Coptic weddings is the attire. The traditional robes worn by the bride and groom hold deep cultural and symbolic significance. Photographing these intricate details, from the vibrant colors to the fine embroidery, adds a layer of richness to the visual narrative of the day. It was also important to photograph the moment when the bride and groom were adorned with the robes. In addition, the placing of the crowns on the couple’s head is incredibly important to the wedding ceremony and was a must-have shot to capture!
Anointing with Oil:
The oil anointment ritual is a beautiful and intimate part of Coptic Orthodox weddings. Capturing the moments of tenderness and reverence during this sacred practice requires a delicate approach. I focus on the expressions, the touch, and the spiritual connection between the couple, ensuring the photographs reflect the sanctity of the occasion.
Sacred Ceremony at the Altar:
The pinnacle of the Coptic Orthodox wedding unfolds at the altar. Here, the emotional and spiritual elements come together in a sacred union. To capture these moments authentically, I make sure to capture the full breadth of the altar space for a grand feel.
Respecting Sacred Moments:
Photographing Coptic Orthodox weddings comes with a profound sense of responsibility. Communicating with the couple and the clergy is crucial to ensure a seamless and respectful photography experience. Every click of the shutter is a tribute to the sanctity of the moment and a celebration of the couple’s love. It’s important to couples celebrating in the Coptic Orthodox church to have a photographer (me!) who really understands the rich symbolism and timing of all of the ceremony’s most important events.
Capturing the divine unions in Coptic Orthodox weddings is a privilege and an art. As a photographer, I continue to appreciate and embrace the diversity of wedding traditions, ensuring that my work reflects the profound beauty of love and spirituality in all its forms.
